Governance
Governance structure
Bearbrook Combined School is an academy of the Great Learners Trust (GLT). The Great Learners Trust is a charity and a company limited by guarantee and is comprised of and governed by:
- Members who guarantee the liabilities of the Trust and review the strategic direction.
- A Board of Trustees who are responsible for, and oversee, the management and administration of the Trust and the Academies run by the Trust.
- Local Governing Boards (LGBs) - GLT Trustees have established academy governance committees, known as Local Governing Boards (LGBs) to carry out some of its school level governance functions. The Local Governing Board ensures that the Trust’s mission and values are reflected within our school community. It monitors how well the school is performing, supports the school's unique ethos and curriculum, and provides reports to the Trust Board on local priorities and progress. In fulfilling these duties, the LGB serves as an important link between the Trust Board and the local community, including parents, pupils, and staff.
The LGB operates in accordance with the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation, which outlines the division of responsibilities between the Trust Board and local governance.
Together, the Trust Board and the LGB ensure effective governance that prioritises pupils' learning, safety, and wellbeing in all decision-making.
Further information about the governance structure and committee terms of reference can be found on the GLT website - https://www.greatlearnerstrust.co.uk/

Statutory Information
As a school within the Great Learners Trust, we are required to publish key governance information so families can clearly understand how our school is supported and overseen.
Our school follows the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation, Local Governing Board (LGB) Terms of Reference, and the Trust’s Governance Structure. These documents explain how responsibilities are shared between the Trust and the school, the areas of focus for governors, and how governance works across the Trust. All of these documents are available to view on the Great Learners Trust website.
Every governor also completes an annual Register of Interests to ensure transparency regarding any personal or professional connections. We also publish the Governor Attendance Record for the previous academic year so families can see each governor's level of engagement in LGB meetings. These documents are both available to view below.

I am in my third year as a governor at Bearbrook and I have been co-chair of governors since September 2023. My son attended Bearbrook from pre-school all the way through to year 6 and although he has now moved on from the school I am very pleased to still be part of the Bearbrook community. I have worked in music and performing arts education for 24 years, during which time I have taught every age group from reception to sixth form. I currently work as a specialist music teacher, which includes teaching music to reception and years 1, 5 and 6 in the school, as well as teaching in 6 other local primary and secondary schools. |

I am the Headteacher of Bearbrook Primary School and have worked at the school for over 20 years. During this time, I have held a wide range of roles, including setting up our preschool provision and establishing a specialist unit within the school for children with communication difficulties. Having dedicated so many years to Bearbrook, I am deeply passionate about its continued success and the outcomes for all pupils. I am also an experienced governor, currently serving as Chair of Governors at a village primary school, and I have a strong understanding of the importance and responsibility of the governor role. |

I am a new school governor living in Aylesbury. I work in Higher Education and have trained ELT teachers in Turkey, Asia and the Middle East. I have worked on educational resources used in schools around the world and continue to travel as much as my job requires - mainly the Middle East, the US and China at this time. My interest in primary education sits with ensuring equal opportunities for students for whom English is not their primary language. I am also a Mental Health first aider and a qualified counsellor. |

I am a Community Governor, although my son has very recently begun in the Bearbrook Pre-School. I have responsibility within the Board for Finance, but always make sure that I'm not blinkered by numbers and instead see the school as a whole. I work in adult education, and believe that learning is life-long. That said, the foundations that are built at primary and pre-school are especially important as they stay with you and support you all the way through your life's learning journey. As such, it's very important to me to help Bearbook be the best it can be! |

As a busy mum with a son in Year 5 of the school, I'm involved with leading the local scouting Squirrels Drey and the Aylesbury Library Weekly Chatterbooks Group. I spend very little time relaxing . As a primary school, teacher with 27 years experience in Buckinghamshire schools I have recently taken Medical Retirement and begun a life away from the classroom which involves Renovation, Repurposing and Recycling items which was a hobby of mine for many years! On the odd occasions now I get called in to run the incredibly popular Bounce & Rhyme sessions for 0-4 year olds in the morning, which keeps me remembering those super nursery rhymes as well as keeps me active cycling back and forth to the library in town several times a week. Being voted onto the governing board just before retirement, has ensured I wont be relaxing any time soon and to add in more stings to my bow, I am part way through the TENANCY TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism 2023 which I am studying with New College Swindon. |

I am an experienced governor having served on the governing body for over 12 years and I currently hold the position of Staff Governor. I enjoy serving on the governing body because it gives me a more holistic view of the school and opportunity to make a difference to the education of the pupils within it. I have also fulfilled many roles within the school; a parent of children, teaching assistant, and class teacher and I have enjoyed being part of a vibrant and exciting school. Bearbrook, for me, feels like coming home; the people and pupils are warm, kind and welcoming. |
