Intent

At Bearbrook, we want to inspire children to question, explore and develop an understanding of the world around them. We want to provide children with a high quality science education which provides the foundations for understanding the world through scientific knowledge and skills. We believe that the purpose of education is to inspire our children to become curious learners who have the confidence to try new things and see failure as a learning opportunity. At Bearbrook, children will be given the opportunity to share and discuss their own experiences and understanding of the world, to explore this through practical, hands on science activities and then reflect on how their new learning supports or contradicts existing ideas.

Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils at Bearbrook should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

Implementation

At Bearbrook we understand the importance of Science and Scientific thinking and we try to weave this in to all that we do.

Our Early Years team deliver an ‘in the moment’, child centred curriculum which is tailored to the children’s specific needs and interests. From Year 1 to Year 6, children are taught weekly science lessons which encompass the individual topic areas and curriculum objectives within each year group, including working scientifically skills. Teachers draw from a range of sources to plan high quality science lessons, including KAPOW. Our lessons focus on hands on, practical science aided by the use of physical equipment, images, videos and EXPOLRIFY activities to help enhance children’s learning experiences. Each lesson includes opportunities to revisit prior learning through flashback style questions and the introduction of new vocabulary and use of science stem sentences. We also aim to challenge our pupils by providing opportunities to develop life skills within science lessons, e.g. resilience, working collaboratively and reflecting critically on their learning. In addition to this, we engage children in science through school trips, themed days and after school clubs.

Impact

Our children enjoy science lessons and staff are highly engaged in the subject.

To truly understand the impact of our Science curriculum, you have to come and visit.

To measure the impact, we have clear end points identified using unit assessment statements. Staff are therefore fully aware of the expectations of all children. We use a range of formative assessment in every Science lesson including concept cartoons, EXPLORIFY activities, recap quizzes and flash back questions. This information can then be used to inform our planning and short-term intervention 'Keep up, not catch up.' To measure progress, we use a range of assessment techniques at the end of each unit.

The pupils are Scientists! They enjoy the science experiences that we provide for them, both inside and outside of school. The children at our school recognise that Science is in everything that we do, not just in Science lessons.

Pupil voice July 2025

Y1 - I love lessons. I love it when we do stuff and make stuff and see what happens in experiments.

Y2 - Our teachers are so fun. They let us do lots of experiments and try things to see what happens.

Y3-  Science is exciting. Seeing what happens and seeing how things work. We love the lessons when we investigate different theories and sees what happens. Each lesson is different and new.

Y4 - We never stop learning. The important thing is to not stop questioning. Science questions everything.

Y5 -  Science at Bearbrook is interesting and fascinating. Each lesson is different and lets us learn in a different way to other lessons.

Y6 - Science is about learning through investigating, answering questions and using scicne to prove theories. If you make a mistake, it's not a mistake it's learning.
