Curriculum meets new 2014 curriculum requirements
The Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2
At Bearbrook, our vision is for children, staff and parents to be nurtured, inspired and for all to achieve.
We believe that the purpose of education is to inspire our children to become curious learners who have the confidence to try new things and see failure as a learning opportunity.
Our curriculum develops independence, curiosity, understanding and appreciation of themselves and others. It gives them the skills to be the best person they can be and an understanding of their significance and impact on the world around them.
In order to achieve this, our curriculum is thought provoking, child led, purposeful and open to change.
Our curriculum is organised into three areas, ‘Discover’, ‘Explore’ and ‘Create’. Central to the curriculum are Core Skills that underpin everything we do:
• To be happy and enjoy learning experiences
• To be resilient and learn from mistakes
• To have a growth mind set
• To build positive relationships with peers and adults
• To know who to go to when support is needed
• To ask questions to extend thinking
• To generate ideas and explore possibilities
• To overcome barriers by trying out alternatives
• To connect ideas and experiences in inventive ways
• To seek out and enjoy challenges
• To collaborate with others
• To assess themselves and others
• To speak clearly and convey ideas confidently
• To read and communicate ideas in writing efficiently and effectively
• To calculate efficiently and apply skills to solve problems
• To use new technologies confidently and purposefully
All Foundation subjects have rigorous skills progression grids which ensure that key subject-specific learning is embedded throughout each project. This is assessed using SOLO taxonomy as a means of classifying learning outcomes in terms of complexity, allowing us to assess mastery across the curriculum by focusing on depth of knowledge rather than simply coverage. Parents are given regular information on the development of their children.
Our curriculum has the following areas of learning with ICT running throughout:
Art and design
Design and technology
Through our curriculum we aim for all of our children to become:
Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
We have identified three key drivers that form the basis of our curriculum. They ensure that
we are developing the whole child and meeting the needs of our school community.
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
We believe that our children deserve inspirational learning opportunities. Curriculum planning ensures that children are immersed in exciting projects with authentic outcomes. They are challenged to work creatively whilst deepening their knowledge and understanding through highly engaging and enriching experiences.
Our curriculum reflects the values in our society that promote personal development, equality
of opportunity, economic wellbeing, a healthy and just democracy and a sustainable future.
They relate to the following:
Ourselves, as individuals capable of spiritual, moral, social, intellectual and physical growth and development
Our relationships, as fundamental to the development and fulfillment of happy and healthy lives, and to the good of the community
Our society, which is shaped by the contributions of a diverse range of people, cultures and heritages
Our environment, as the basis of life and a source of wonder and inspiration that needs to be protected.
